Today, over a billion people worldwide will celebrate Earth Day. It is a day to honor the fragile planet we call home.

Each year, Earth Day organizers select a theme. It is meant to raise awareness of a problem or to help find solutions. This year’s theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.” It focuses on the impact that small groups and individuals can have in protecting the planet.

“Environmental stewardship has never depended on a single administration, institution, or election," Earthday.org wrote in a statement. "It is sustained by the daily decisions of communities, educators, workers, innovators, and families."

Earthday.org cited efforts by small groups to effect big changes. It pointed to towns like Rock Port, Missouri. Rock Port became the first US city to get all of its energy from wind power. It also put a spotlight on Greensburg, Kansas. Greensburg was badly damaged by a tornado in 2007. It rebuilt its power grid using solar and wind energy. It now produces so much solar and wind power that it exports power to the rest of the state.

The first Earth Day was observed in 1970. Since then, the event has spread to more than 190 countries. It has inspired landmark efforts in environmental protection. One major landmark was the Paris Climate Accords. They were signed by 195 nations on Earth Day in 2016. And it inspired Earth Day Week 2020. Earth Day Week featured a series of demonstrations around the world. It is widely believed to be the largest online mass mobilization of people ever.

Reflect: What are some small actions you could take in your daily life that have a positive impact on your environment or community?
