Synopsis
This activity book from Michigan Learning Channel contains a number of activities for students to explore soil and plants, including coloring pages, mazes, word searches, and simple hands-on investigations.
Students will complete activities to understand what soil is made up of, special characteristics of plants like sunflowers, the best way to water a plant, how water moves through plants, and how to propagate plants for food production.
Students will love getting to learn through hands-on exploration.
The images in this activity book are colorful and inviting for young students.
Prerequisites
Depending on the activity, teachers will need to collect a variety of materials, such as paint, seeds, pots, trays, etc.
Before assigning the word search as a required activity, teachers should be aware of any learning differences, such as dyslexia, which could make this word search difficult to complete.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers can use these resources as warm-up or review activities to go along with lessons. For example, students can complete the soil recipe activity after going through this lesson about soil health.
Before making art with the seeds, students can complete an activity where they sort different kinds of seeds based on their observable features.
Teachers can use the plant propagation activity as a way to spark a conversation about food waste and other uses for it. Depending on students’ ages and background knowledge, teachers can also share that food waste causes greenhouse gas emissions. This project can help students better understand food waste and solutions to it.
These activities can be linked to various Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 2, Zero Hunger, and SDG 15, Life on Land.
