Synopsis

This guide is for California educators in farm-to-school programs who want to ensure their lessons and activities are culturally relevant and inclusive.
The guide includes strategies and considerations for creating lessons that make students feel valued and safe, classroom activities that exemplify these strategies, and artwork to display around the school.

Differentiation & Implementation

When doing the "Who Grows This Crop?" activity, students can map the food system for their favorite foods and compare local food systems to those that rely on transporting goods. The lesson "Modeling the Local Food System" can help with this.
Teachers can make connections to the community by taking students on a field trip to a local farm or farmers market.
During the "Design Your Own School Meal" activity, students can discuss plant-based protein options and the impacts of meat production on climate change.
Students can practice technical writing by creating a recipe book for their favorite dishes.
Inspired by the provided graphics, students can create posters featuring their favorite fruits and vegetables and the many names for them.
