Regional Focus

Global CO2 Atmospheric Concentration

Ask a Question

  • This interactive line graph and data table show the global annual concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.
  • The line graph can be interacted with to compare these parameters for any country or continent.
Teaching Tips

  • The resource provides two ways for students to explore data (line graph and table).
  • Related research and data sources are linked in the Sources section.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Educators should familiarize themselves with this resource before sharing it with students.

  • Earth science teachers can share this resource with students and ask them to think about how scientists were able to gather data about atmospheric CO2 from hundreds of thousands of years ago. After the discussion, teachers can show this video on how scientists use ice cores to understand the history of the atmosphere.
  • Math classes can use the line graph to calculate the rate of change in atmospheric CO2 concentrations between 1822 and 1922. Then students can calculate the rate of change between 1922 and 2022.

Scientist Notes

This resource presents time series data on average atmospheric CO2 within a variable time span of 803,719 BCE – 2022. Students will be able to explore the historical changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration within a global coverage. The resource is recommended for teaching.
