Synopsis
  • This interactive table of climate solutions lists individual solutions and their potential ability to reduce global emissions. Data presented is in possible gigatons of CO2 equivalent reduced/sequestered from 2020-2050.
  • It allows you to sort the solutions by their reduction impact so that you can see which solutions have the biggest potential effect on lowering carbon in the atmosphere.
Teaching Tips

Positives

  • This is a fantastic way to sort through many different solutions to climate change and bring more awareness to the best possible solutions.
  • Students can click on each solution to learn more.

Additional Prerequisites

  • It provides data for two emissions scenarios: emissions reduced/sequestered from a 1.5°C increase in temperature or a 2.0°C increase in temperature.
  • Your students may not be familiar with the impact of some of the top solutions like reduced food waste, health and education, and plant-rich diets.

Differentiation

  • Social studies and civics classes could use this resource as a reference when discussing national and global actions and laws that could reduce the negative impacts of climate change.
  • Science classes could use this resource to investigate the top solutions in more detail and to see how many of the best solutions are related to restoring nature, land use changes, alternative energy generation, and stopping the use of certain chemicals.
  • Other resources related to this topic include this interactive data resource about agriculture, this video about educating girls and women, and this video to future generations.
Scientist Notes
The resource provides in detail projections of carbon sources and sequestration capacity from sectors to help in reducing carbon footprint and global warming potentials from 2020-2050.
Standards
  • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
    • ESS3: Earth and Human Activity
      • MS-ESS3-4 Construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and per-capita consumption of natural resources impact Earth's systems.
      • MS-ESS3-5 Ask questions to clarify evidence of the factors that have caused the rise in global temperatures over the past century.
  • College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Standards
    • Dimension 2: Civics
      • D2.Civ.12.6-8 Assess specific rules and laws (both actual and proposed) as means of addressing public problems.
    • Dimension 2: Economics
      • D2.Eco.15.9-12 Explain how current globalization trends and policies affect economic growth, labor markets, rights of citizens, the environment, and resource and income distribution in different nations.
    • Dimension 4: Taking Informed Action
      • D4.7.6-8 Assess their individual and collective capacities to take action to address local, regional, and global problems, taking into account a range of possible levers of power, strategies, and potential outcomes.
