Thought Question: If you could plan the perfect celebration for your friends and community, what would it look like?
One of the devastating effects of wildfires is a loss of normalcy. The destruction can rob people of the routines and connections that help them feel safe. High school students in Altadena, California, have had to grapple with that loss in recent months. But now, thanks to a local charity and a bit of Hollywood magic, they’ll get to experience at least one time-honored tradition. They're going to prom.
Major wildfires in and around Los Angeles in January destroyed at least 16,000 homes and buildings. Among them were entire school campuses. Classes have moved online or into makeshift buildings. Families were left in financial hardship. In dire need of some good news, they were surprised this month when it came in the form of a video message from comedian and movie star Steve Carell.
“Attention all seniors. This is Steve Carell with a very special announcement," the Despicable Me actor (he’s the voice of Gru) said. "I work with a wonderful charity ... Alice's Kids, and Alice's Kids wanted me to let you know that they will be paying for all of your prom tickets, and if you've already paid for your prom tickets, they will reimburse you.”
In all, 800 students at six schools will have their proms covered. It will cost about $175,000.
Now that’s something to dance about.
