Thought Question: When you’re going through something difficult, what kinds of support or kindness from others would mean the most to you?
Cruz Anguiano is just two years old. He likely won’t remember much about his Southwest Airlines flight from Dallas to San Diego last month. Because of him, though, the other 160 passengers won’t soon forget the trip.
“Today we do have a very special passenger on board … We have a young hero named Cruz who is 2 years old,” flight attendant Carolyn Gallagher announced to the cabin midway through the flight. “He has been battling a very rare form of cancer and he is now officially cancer-free.”
Cruz was diagnosed in July 2025 with Stage 4 neuroblastoma. It is a cancer of the nervous system. His parents had to fly him to New York to find doctors with the expertise to treat his condition. He endured long treatments and a tricky surgery to remove the tumor.
On January 9, 2026, doctors told Cruz’s parents he was finally cancer-free.
As the family traveled home, the crew on their connecting flight got word of Cruz's milestone. They shared the good news of his recovery with the other passengers. The travelers agreed to write notes of encouragement for Cruz. Attendants passed out napkins, and people shared pens and pencils to draw pictures, write poems, or scrawl heartfelt messages to Cruz. They collected more than 100 in total.
Cruz is too young to read the notes. His mom is keeping them in a box until he’s old enough. She snuck a peek, though.
“I couldn’t get through them without crying,” she told the Post. “Who wouldn’t want to celebrate something like that? It brought everybody together.”
