Synopsis
In this video from Earth Cubs, students will learn about solar panels as a source of renewable energy.
Students will see an example of a school in Birmingham, UK, using solar panels to power their school, hear a song about the power of the sun, and have the opportunity to spot solar-powered objects around their community.
Seeing an example of a school implementing solar energy sends a great message of what is possible.
The Do Good Deed in this video is an easy activity that students can complete independently at home without additional materials.
Prerequisites
Students should know the term clean energy and that the majority of our energy comes from burning fossil fuels, which have impacts on the planet, health, and the climate.
Differentiation & Implementation
As students watch, they can keep track of new vocabulary introduced in this video, such as solar panels, renewable energy, solar power, and others.
After watching this video, teachers can transition into a discussion or lesson about other types of renewable energy.
To make connections to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, teachers can ask students how using solar power can help to address both Goal 7, Affordable and Clean Energy, and Goal 13, Climate Action. Teachers can also ask students to think of any other Goals that using solar power or other renewable energy can address.
After watching, teachers can take students on a walk around the school or nearby area to complete the Do Good Deed and record solar-powered things they see. Alternatively, teachers can have students keep a record of solar-powered things they spot over the weekend to get a more diverse list.
