What it is

  • In this lesson, students use an interactive tool to learn about different refrigerants and make judgments about their efficacy.

  • Students will analyze the refrigerants' safety concerns, global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, atmospheric lifetime, and other aspects to determine which is the best refrigerant.

Teaching tips

Prerequisites:

  • Ensure students are familiar with chemical structures, ozone, and global warming.

  • Ensure students know how to put two tabs in split-screen so they can have the lesson open at the same time as the interactive tool.

Classroom Implementation:

  • Use this resource in a unit about chemical properties and safety.

  • Use this resource in a flipped classroom model, having students do the interactive activity and prepare answers to the reflection questions as homework, then discuss their findings in class the next day.
