This activity gives students a creative outlet for expressing their feelings.
Students will benefit from the demonstration video for creating the posters.
Prerequisites
Students will need cardboard to paint/draw on, markers or paint, and paintbrushes if they will be painting.
In the demonstration video, the example being used is the Black Lives Matter movement. Students may need some background information on what this movement is and what sparked it.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers can print the images of exemplar signs provided in the resource and hang them around the room. Teachers can also include images of other signs that fit with their students' focus areas. Then, students can observe the examples in a gallery walk, making note of what they like that they can implement without directly copying an idea.
This is a fairly open-ended project, but teachers can encourage students to make posters about climate change if that is an issue they are currently studying. Teachers can also show students this video about climate protests to give more specific examples.
To make connections to history, students can explore historical examples of protest signs, discussing the issues these signs were connected to.
Teachers can give students agency in deciding what they want their sign to address by having students take time to brainstorm about issues that are important to them.
