Synopsis
This interactive simulation guides students through the process of using spreadsheets to practice unit conversion, a foundational skill in scientific and mathematical reasoning applicable to environmental data analysis.
Students work through guided exercises, converting between units of measurement to determine which of the three vehicles is the most fuel-efficient.
This lesson will likely take at least two class periods.
Watch the Simulation Video Walkthrough and review the Teaching Guide, available on the right side of the opening screen.
Consider printing the student worksheets, also available on the right side of the opening screen, so that students don't have to flip between tabs to take notes.
Gather materials for the prehistoric marketplace activity.
Materials:
96 grain items (e.g., dry pasta pieces)
24 wool items (e.g., cotton balls)
8 copper items (e.g., bottle caps)
4 gem items (e.g., marbles)
Prerequisites:
Ensure students understand different units of measurement, can divide and multiply fractions, and are familiar with spreadsheet applications.
Climate Change Connections:
Discuss why fuel efficiency is important for climate change. Ask students to consider how knowing a vehicle's fuel efficiency can help consumers shop more sustainably.
• Consider connecting this to climate data contexts: for example, converting global average temperature anomalies from Celsius to Fahrenheit, or converting energy use from kilowatt-hours to joules. Extensions:
Challenge advanced students to set up a spreadsheet to convert other units of measurement.
