Synopsis

In this lesson, students will learn the ingredients they can grow to make a pizza and plant these in their garden.
Students will read a story connecting plants and seeds to their food, draw their ideal piece of pizza, and plant tomatoes, basil, and other plants that will eventually become pizza ingredients.

Positives

Planting in the garden will help students feel connected to nature and understand where their food comes from.
Having the planting and drawing activities happening simultaneously will keep all students engaged.

Additional Prerequisites

The instructions are written for a non-classroom teacher and outline ways to involve the classroom teacher. Classroom teachers can teach this lesson and use the guidance to involve student teachers, parent helpers, or other adults.
If teachers cannot find physical copies of the suggested books, there are read-alouds for these books on the Internet.
It may help if students have clipboards to work on drawing their pizza slices outside while their classmates plant.
Students should know what plants need to survive and grow.

Differentiation

During math class, students can measure and graph the growth of their seedlings.
Students can practice informative writing skills by creating a recipe for the perfect pizza.
After planting, students can learn about how climate change impacts agriculture and the food we eat.
Students with allergies or dietary restrictions can help teachers plan a garden for an alternative dish. For example, students with celiac can plant cauliflower to signify a cauliflower crust pizza.
