Synopsis
This student art gallery displays all types of visual, performing, and literary artwork about climate change, biodiversity loss, rising sea levels, and other ocean-related topics.
Students will see the award-winning poetry, musical performances, paintings, illustrated videos, and other types of art from the Annual Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Contest.
There are many works that will inspire students to take action or create their own climate-related artwork.
The site has an enormous amount of art.
Additional Prerequisites
Some of the videos take a while to load.
Students should have a basic understanding of climate change and how humans are causing it.
Differentiation
This gallery could support a classroom discussion on how different groups in America would react to the artwork in this gallery.
This gallery could enhance a classroom discussion about the impact art does or doesn't have on human behavior.
The video "Change is Possible" could accompany a classroom discussion about the Green New Deal, how it could help America fight climate change, and what political obstacles are keeping it from becoming law.
The poem "Cheeseburgers Killed the Movement" could supplement a classroom discussion about the extent to which personal responsibility should be emphasized when talking about climate change.
The musical performances display how one student can make their own duet or quartet using video and recording software. Consider using these videos to encourage music students to create their own arrangements and record each part for the ensemble.

Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs is a global nonprofit working at the intersection of environmental science and the arts. Bow Seat hosts the annual Ocean Awareness Contest, inviting students worldwide to create art, writing, film, and other creative media to learn about and speak up against the climate crisis. Since 2011, Bow Seat has engaged with nearly 30,000 students in all 50 U.S. states and 138 countries.
