Synopsis
This collection of data visualizations and a video from Climate Central demonstrates how February and March temperatures have risen in Northern Italy, the host of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Students will understand how global temperature rise impacts a city’s potential to host the Winter Olympics, why rising temperatures are not ideal for these events moving forward, and the potential impacts of future warming.
This resource demonstrates how climate change is impacting many things, including culture.
The graphics are engaging and easy to read.
Prerequisites
Though there is an option to toggle the video to a Spanish version, this does not appear to work.
Students should understand that temperature increase is a result of climate change.
Differentiation & Implementation
As a class, teachers can play the video. Then, teachers can separate students into groups, with each group getting a different graphic to analyze. Students can then swap graphics with another group and discuss what they saw compared to the other groups.
With this knowledge in mind, students can discuss how climate change can also have impacts on the economies that rely on winter activities and tourism for those activities.
Students can use this information to inspire art pieces that depict a world where it is too warm for winter sports and the Winter Olympics.
