Synopsis
- This activity guides young learners to build a mini greenhouse to grow their own plants from seeds.
- Students add soil, plant seeds, cover the box with plastic, cut ventilation holes, and place the box in a sunny spot to watch the seeds grow.
Teaching Materials
Materials:
- Students will need:
- Recycled plastic packaging
- Shoe box
- Soil
- Seeds
- Tape
- Scissors
Classroom Implementation:
- An explanation of what a greenhouse is and how it works may help students: a greenhouse traps heat and moisture, giving plants a warmer, wetter environment to grow in.
- Adult help is recommended when children use scissors to cut the plastic.
Extensions:
- This activity can be turned into an experiment by comparing a plant with a greenhouse to one without and measuring growth periodically.
