How Does Climate Impact My Hobbies Here in Maine?

Positives

• For the final project of this learning module, students can choose from three ways to present their learning, each giving students an authentic purpose for their writing/presentation.
• Students get a lot of choice in this learning module, from how to participate in certain activities to how they want to demonstrate their learning.
  

Additional Prerequisites

• Some students may need the terms entrepreneur and initiative defined prior to beginning the lesson.
• The video defines the terms recreation and hobbies quite well, however, it may be beneficial to talk about and give examples of hobbies and recreation activities with students prior to the lesson, especially for English language learners.
• Students should be familiar with a world map and the continents, and should have a basic understanding of plant respiration.

Differentiation

• While watching or after watching the climate zones video, students can also create a chart, listing the characteristics of each climate zone.
• Students with auditory processing difficulties can slow the speed of the videos to support their learning.
• Language arts classes can use this module in persuasive writing units.
• Students in SEL or guidance classes can discuss the importance of hobbies and recreation when it comes to mental health.
• Geography classes can use this module as students label the climate zones on a map. Students can also discuss the effect that their climate zone has on their economy and, subsequently, how climate change can impact that economy.
• Science classes can use this learning module in a unit discussing greenhouse gases and/or the various cycles in plants, as both are briefly covered in this module.
