Synopsis
This interactive database summarizes the utility use and associated costs for Connecticut's executive branch agencies by fiscal year.
Each agency has a data table, a line graph depicting year-to-year change, a pie chart of the cost breakdown, and a pie chart of the resulting emissions by commodity.
The resource presents the data in graphs and charts for easy comparison.
This data transparency allows students to hold their government accountable for sustainability goals.
Additional Prerequisites
Students should know the sources of greenhouse gas emissions and understand how utilities cause emissions.
Students should know how to read graphs and charts.
Differentiation
In social studies and civics classes, students can assess the progress made toward the state's sustainability goals, which are linked.
Earth science classes can focus on the emissions breakdown and explore how these agencies can further reduce emissions.
Students can identify areas for improvement in emissions or cost reduction, brainstorm possible solutions, and write a letter to the government encouraging these changes.
Math students can analyze the data and answer questions comparing the datasets.
