Prerequisites

For the Garden Scout worksheet, teachers will need to find a time to take students outside.
Teachers may need to do additional planning for a garden or seed-planting activity if using the Plant Labels worksheet.

Differentiation & Implementation

Teachers can use the word search activity as morning work to get students ready for a lesson about growing plants or plant life cycles.
Teachers can have students take the Garden Scout worksheet home to explore their backyards. Then, students can compare what they found to what other classmates found.
Students may also enjoy this hands-on seed-starting activity and can use their plant labels to put on the back of their mini greenhouses.
Teachers build connections between these activities and students' understanding of Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land and Goal 2: Zero Hunger.
To build students towards an understanding of climate change, teachers can begin to talk about how different plants and seeds can grow in different climates and that different animals can survive in different climates, so a garden scout in one region may see different organisms from a garden scout in another.
