Synopsis

This video from The Kid Should See This shows students how green roofs reduce stormwater runoff, provide habitat for wildlife, insulate the indoor temperature of buildings, and help reduce the urban heat-island effect in cities.
There are two videos and a brief article about the green roof on the Javits Convention Center in New York City, which has lowered energy use in the building by twenty-six percent and saved them more than three million dollars.

Science and engineering students can use this resource for lessons about stormwater pollution, watersheds, the physics of water flowing over impervious vs permeable surfaces, and incorporating nature-based solutions into urban stormwater design.
