Continuous Monitoring Station (Casco Bay)
Grades6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12Earth and Space Sciences
What it is
This resource gives real-time data on Casco Bay's health at the Yarmouth, Harpswell, and Portland Harbor monitoring stations.
Students can see up-to-date graphs showing the temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and other properties for each station, as well as conveniently compare the data across all three stations.
Teaching tips
Preparation:
Note that the link to the series of videos does not take users to a new page. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find the video series, “Mike’s Field Notes.”
Prerequisites:
Ensure students are familiar with the terms used to describe the water's health.
Ensure students can read graphs and charts to interpret the data they display.
Classroom Implementation:
Use this resource to practice analyzing graphs and charts.
Consider splitting students into groups or pairs to compare data for one measurement (such as temperature) across monitoring stations.
Climate Change Connections:
Discuss with students how climate change will impact watershed health and encourage them to be stewards of their watersheds.
Scientist's Note:
This is a great source to familiarize students with ocean data and general data analysis.
