Synopsis
This slide deck and helpful implementation guide from Climate Central features a huge collection of graphs and other visual aids to explain the causes of climate change, solutions, and impacts on the United States, including extreme weather and changing ecosystems.
The slides cover a wide range of topics, including, the greenhouse effect, human greenhouse gas emissions, warming oceans, health impacts, and much more.
These data visualizations are clean, eye-catching, and easy to understand.
Helpful speaker's notes provide additional context and links to updated versions of the graph.
Prerequisites
Depending on how the presentation is used, students may benefit from having a general understanding of climate change.
Students may also need certain terms, ideas, or references explained, such as how climate change is measured in degrees of global average temperature change over a specific time frame.
The link in the notes for the Extreme Heat and Children slide, and the first link in the notes for the Hurricanes & Climate Change slide are broken.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers can use the graphs and visuals as bell ringers to introduce the topic of the day, such as displaying a relevant visual as students walk in, then have them record what they notice about it and the questions they have.
Teachers can utilize the extreme weather slides and linked resources by having students in groups explore one type of extreme weather and the toolkit linked in the speaker's notes for that slide. Students can then produce a presentation or other product to demonstrate what they learned and share information with the rest of the class.
To make art connections, teachers can show students examples of climate data art, like this one from Jill Pelto. Then, students can select one of the graphs from the presentation to inspire a piece of data art.
