Synopsis
In this lesson, students will reflect on climate-related careers, analyze job descriptions, and consider what climate-related role they are best-suited for.
The lesson includes options for hands-on activities, such as mock interviews, and different ways for students to demonstrate their learning.
Teachers can find the other lesson materials, including the presentation slides and student handouts, here under the dropdown for Lesson 18.
Picturing themselves in a climate-critical career will help students feel more confident in their ability to work towards positive change in the future.
Having students consider their own skills is an important component of career exploration.
Prerequisites
This is meant to be the culminating lesson for the Massachusetts Climate Careers Unit; however, this lesson can be used to follow any exploration of climate-related careers.
Before this lesson, students will need to have explored a variety of climate careers.
Differentiation & Implementation
This lesson can be co-taught by science teachers, guidance counselors, or career skills teachers.
When evaluating the job descriptions, students can select one of the jobs to fill out a mock application and cover letter for.
This lesson offers a variety of differentiation options to meet the needs of many different students, and extensions to expand on the topics explored in the lesson.
Teachers can use this lesson to make connections to the Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth. Teachers can also check out this resource for a green careers activity that has students consider the SDGs in a community project.
