Across weekly themes, participants build the emotional resilience and sense of agency needed to sustain active hope and take meaningful action.
Teaching Materials
Preparation:
This course is broken into seven weeks, and participants are emailed the content on a weekly basis. Enroll in the course about two months before you intend to use it, to ensure you have advanced access to the content.
Note that the speaker’s background is in working with those suffering from addiction, and he often references this work.
In Week 5, “An Introduction to Deep Time,” at about 2:52, an acronym S.H.I.T. appears onscreen. The word is not said.
Prerequisites:
Note that some of the course videos reference the Covid-19 pandemic. Some students may benefit from background information on the pandemic and its impacts.
Consider providing background information on apartheid in South Africa, as it is referenced in the Week 5 materials.
Classroom Implementation:
Use this resource alongside a unit about climate change or other heavy topics as a strategy for taking care of students’ emotional health.
Use this in a flipped classroom model, where students watch the videos in preparation for an in-class session where students engage in that week's practice.
Differentiation:
If class time is short and students don’t have the stamina for the whole course, omit the videos and activities marked with an “E” for the “extended” version of the course.
Interdisciplinary Connections:
Social Studies:
Use some of the materials in Week 5 to discuss colonization and its lasting impacts.
Music:
Collaborate with music teachers to assist students in creating a contribution to the Active Hope music video project.
Scientist's Note:
Due to the nature of this course, only the first week's materials have been reviewed by a scientist.
