Drawing Quotes: An Engagement Reflection Activity

|
Ask a Question

Synopsis
  • This activity asks students to reflect on a quote from Jane Goodall and create a piece of artwork to reflect the quote.
  • Students can choose from one of four inspiring quotes about taking action.
Teaching Tips

Positives

  • This activity will work for students at any ability level and can be scaffolded accordingly.
  • Dr. Goodall's quotes are varied and can be interpreted in several ways, which will make for a great variety of art.
  • The resource provides example artwork from students and artists.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Teachers will need art supplies such as posters, markers, crayons, pencils, paint, scissors, magazines, photos, and glue for this activity.
  • Teachers may want to discuss the word "apathy"  for students to understand one quote.

Differentiation

  • Although this is an art activity, it could be used in a science or social studies class while studying conservation or Dr. Jane Goodall.
  • Once students have created their artwork, display them around the room and have students complete a gallery walk. Provide students with post-its and have them leave positive feedback for their peers.
  • Several excellent extensions are suggested in the resource, including creating photo collages, journaling about the quotes, and creating comic strips.
  • Other related resources include this activity where students create a "do one thing" mural, this animated poem read by Jane Goodall, and this art piece that will get students thinking.
Scientist Notes
This contains reflective activities to engage students to be environmentally responsible for the planet. It is ideal and illustrative for teaching.
