Ask a Question

Synopsis
  • This chapter of the Our Climate Our Future series explains greenhouse gases, the greenhouse effect, historic carbon dioxide levels, and the negative effects of climate change that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities.
  • There is a video, worksheet, and five articles included in this chapter.
Teaching Tips

Positives

  • The readings cover topics mentioned in the video, such as using ice cores to understand the history of Earth's climate, how climate change causes the water cycle to change, isotopes, and historic carbon dioxide levels.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Teachers will need to register for a free account to access the materials.

Differentiation

  • Science classes could use these materials when discussing atoms, molecules, the atmosphere, isotopes, the greenhouse effect, the water cycle, or the carbon cycle.
  • Social studies classes could discuss the effects of climate change on various communities and groups of people who will be (and already are) negatively affected by climate change.
  • Other resources on this topic include this experiment, this video about coral reefs, and this NASA resource.
Scientist Notes

The video explains the concept of the greenhouse effect. There is no contradiction in the content, except that the narrative, "farmers in Africa are suffering from major droughts" appears exaggerated. Thus, specific locations should have been mentioned where these farmers face the major droughts, as it is scientifically impossible for every farmer in Africa to suffer droughts. This resource is recommended for teaching.

Standards

    • ESS3: Earth and Human Activity
      • MS-ESS3-4 Construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and per-capita consumption of natural resources impact Earth's systems.
      • MS-ESS3-5 Ask questions to clarify evidence of the factors that have caused the rise in global temperatures over the past century.
      • HS-ESS3-6 Use a computational representation to illustrate the relationships among Earth systems and how those relationships are being modified due to human activity.
