About this lesson
Students apply multi-digit arithmetic to calculate the cost of coastal erosion at the Jersey Shore.
Inquire: Students identify the cost of resanding popular beaches at the Jersey Shore.
Investigate: Students add multi-digit numbers to calculate the cost of resanding popular beaches at the Jersey Shore.

Suggestions
- This lesson should be taught in a grade 4 Math Unit that focuses on Number and Operations in Base Ten, or at the beginning of the school year when reviewing concepts of Place Value, Rounding, and Addition/Subtraction.
- This lesson encourages students to foster responsible decision-making and take action by exploring solutions they can bring back to their own communities.
- Teacher will need to guide the discussion on the implications of resanding costs to facilitate the connection between the need to resand and the financial impact.
Prerequisites
- This is lesson 3 of 3 in our 4th grade Unidad de matemáticas: Erosión costera. The content learned in Lesson 1 and Lesson 2 serves as background knowledge for Lesson 3.
- Multi-digit addition should have been introduced prior to this lesson.
- Students need to be familiar with the expectations before engaging in Academic Discussions and Accountable Talk.
- Students should have a working understanding of the following academic language: la regeneración, el coste, and más que / menos que.
Differentiation
- To support all students contributing to group conversations, sentence frames and starters should be provided for Academic Discussion and Accountable Talk (e.g., Estoy de acuerdo / No estoy de acuerdo ____ porque ____).
- Group and/or partner work should be scaffolded as 1 expert to 1 novice to facilitate peer scaffolding and conversation.
- Number Charts and place value graphic organizers can be provided to scaffold multi-digit addition.
- If this lesson is being implemented in a Newcomer program or with students unfamiliar with the Jersey Shore, it is recommended the teacher preselects the names of some popular beaches and provides them to the students at the beginning of the Inquire step. These can be found in the speaker notes of the Teacher Slideshow.
- For additional solutions to combat climate change, teacher can share Preguntas frecuentes sobre el cambio climático with students.
From the scientist review
Students can use this resource to learn about the effects of coastal erosion on the shorelines of New Jersey as well as how to use simple mathematical techniques to determine economic loss resulting from the erosion impacts. After reviewing the lesson, we concluded that it met our credibility test for science.
