Synopsis
In this lesson, students will learn to define justice verbally and visually and to differentiate between related terms.
Students will view images to define the terms equity, equality, and justice, create their own visual definitions, and use personal devices to search for definitions of unknown words.
The visual representation of equality, equity, and justice helps students to easily conceptualize these abstract concepts.
Students will love flexing their creativity to illustrate what justice looks like to them.
Prerequisites
Students should know how to find reliable definitions for terms online.
Students will need either 1:1 devices or will need to work in groups.
Students should know how to cite their sources.
Differentiation & Implementation
After completing this lesson, students can read about different examples of environmental injustice and draw what justice would look like in these situations.
Students can brainstorm ways to help those facing food insecurity in their communities.
To help students practice using context clues to infer the meaning of unknown words, teachers can provide students with sentences with the new terms and ask them to look for clues that may tell them the word's meaning.
