Synopsis
- This collection of printable sheets profiles native and invasive plants and animals found in Florida, such as the American alligator, gopher tortoise, Burmese python, and air potato.
- Each sheet helps students identify a species and provides facts about its habitat, diet, and range and explains how to protect native populations or prevent the spread of invasive ones.
- Matching coloring sheets accompany the profiles for students to use.
Teaching Materials
Classroom Implementation:
- Assign each student a native and an invasive species to read about, color, and show-and-tell to the class.
- Introduce students to food webs by using string or yarn to connect species students colored; then, introduce an invasive species and cut any connections that it affects, so students can see the impact.
Extensions:
- Plan an outing to a local wildlife reserve and have students use their profiles to identify species they observe.
