Synopsis
- In this lesson, students will create solutions to protect houses from flooding and heavy rains.
- Students will create miniature houses, design solutions utilizing gutters, downspouts, barrels, and rain gardens represented by everyday objects, and test solutions using watering cans to simulate heavy rains.
- The background information included is specific to New York State, but this lesson is relevant and useful for classrooms outside of New York.

- The lesson will take 30-45 minutes.

- After completing this lesson, older students can discuss green infrastructure and the careers associated with its implementation.
- Teachers may want to cut the straws and house templates ahead of time for very young students.
- Students can research other adaptation strategies to combat climate change impacts, such as cooling centers to combat very hot days.
- If time permits, students may enjoy decorating their houses.
This activity introduces students to stormwater management by building a paper house with rain barrels or gardens. The text and instructions are very clear. This resource is a perfect introduction to climate change adaptation, with the background describing how climate change alters weather patterns, necessitating adaptation.
