Regional Focus

Per Capita CO2 Emissions by Fuel Type (Multiple Countries)

Ask a Question

  • This interactive chart and table allow students to compare different countries' per capita CO2 emissions by fuel type.
Teaching Tips

  • In the chart, students can add or remove countries to customize their comparisons.
  • Students can sort each column of the table in ascending or descending order.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Students can view the same datasets by single country using this resource.
  • All data and visuals are available to download.

  • Students could conduct research on individual countries to explain the distribution of emissions by fuel type (e.g., Why does South Africa burn so much coal? Why does India burn so little gas?)
  • Social studies or government classes could use this data to look at per capita emissions and levels of poverty around the world. Students could discuss Sustainable Development Goal #7: Affordable and Clean Energy.
Scientist Notes

The method used in estimating per capita CO2 emissions at a country level is appropriate. Each of the fuel types (gas, coal, oil, cement, flaring, etc.) from multiple countries was evaluated and stacked in tonnes. Students have the option to investigate their preferred fuel type to gain insights into the emissions pattern. Above all, this resource is recommended for teaching.
