Regional Focus

Energy Intensity

Ask a Question

  • This resource includes an interactive chart and map that compares the energy intensity of different countries.
  • Energy intensity is measured as primary energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product and it is measured in kilowatt-hours.
  • The map and line graph can be interacted with to compare as many countries as desired.
Teaching Tips

  • The interactive provides three ways for students to explore data (line graph, map, and table).
  • Students may choose to view datasets for various geographic locations and time periods.
  • Related research and data are linked.
  • The site explains how the data was collected.

Additional Prerequisites

  • Educators would need time to get familiar with this interactive media and decide on how to implement it with the learners.
  • Background on energy production may be helpful

  • Can be used as a practical application of the uses of line graphs learned in Statistics and Mathematics.
  • Students learning about energy generation and measurement in Physics may find this a practical application of metrics learned.
Scientist Notes

The resource provides insight on the intensity of primary energy consumption using time series data of primary energy to per capita population figures from selected countries under study. The Maddison Project database provided datasets used in calculating energy intensity per unit from total real GDP figures. This resource is recommended for teaching.
