• Review the background information and directions with students as a whole group. Then, let students work independently on the 1,000 Number Packet. The Comparing Numbers section can be completed in partners or independently.

• It is important to note that the concept of endangered animals may be difficult for some students. Be sure to check in and provide a safe space for students to share their feelings related to this topic.
• This resource is a great addition to a unit on understanding numbers in base ten.
• To extend learning, students may research other organisms on the IUCN Red List in their region.

Students can use numbers to investigate and tally species that are listed on the IUCN Red List. It is imperative that they are able to identify and correlate the pace of biodiversity loss with changes in the environment.
