Synopsis
These click-through slides from EarthCubs feature images, videos, and text to introduce students to gender inequalities.
Students will see a Netflix video about active citizenship, a video about gender discrimination in India related to water access, and think about how prejudice regarding gender norms maintains inequality.
The presentation also includes references to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
The multi-media approach will keep kids engaged with the content.
Students will love the song about making changes and may be inspired to take action.
Prerequisites
Teachers may need to define the word equal for students.
It may also benefit students to understand the UN Sustainable Development goals, as these are referenced in the presentation. The UN Sustainable Development Goals and Graphics activity may be a useful resource to build this background knowledge.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers can pause reading every time there is a Sustainable Development Goal on the page. Teachers can invite students to take a moment and think about how the information in the presentation connects to this goal.
Teachers can use this presentation to introduce students to the importance of education for girls and women when it comes to the climate crisis. The video Women and Girls, You Are Part of the Climate Solution is for older students but can also provide teachers with the necessary background information to discuss this topic.
This presentation can serve as an introduction to environmental justice and how climate change can exacerbate these issues. For example, increasing water scarcity can result in young women walking further and taking even more time to collect water, giving them less time for education.
After watching the video about making a change, students can discuss the importance of civic action and brainstorm ways they can make changes in their communities.
