Lesson Plans
K12
Synopsis
In this activity from the World's Largest Lesson, students will build an appreciation for nature that will eventually help them understand the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals for climate action, protecting life on land, and building sustainable communities.
Students will discuss the words nature, planet, and Earth, go out in nature to collect materials, and create a collage to express their love for the planet.
Students will love getting outside to collect materials.
This open-ended project will channel students' creativity and allow them to express themselves freely.
Prerequisites
Teachers will need to prepare some materials ahead of time, including cutting heart-shaped pieces of cardstock and gathering art supplies.
Teachers will need to plan a time to go outside to collect natural materials with students.
Differentiation & Implementation
If appropriate, teachers and students can discuss the Sustainable Development Goals that connect to this activity. Teachers can explain that these goals were created to care for and protect the planet that we love and the nature it supports.
Teachers can connect this activity to the ecosystem services that nature provides, such as releasing oxygen, filtering the water, and providing shelter. Teachers can then introduce climate change and other human activities that threaten nature and the services we need.
To tap into students' funds of knowledge about the terms Earth, nature, and planet, teachers can invite students to draw or write about what they picture when they hear these terms. Students can then share these creations with the class.
To make a language arts connection, students can write love poems to nature, expressing their appreciation while practicing the implementation of poetic devices.
