Synopsis
This resource from Canopy introduces students to the connections between trees and climate change, and includes activities to enhance their comprehension.
Students will learn about greenhouse gases, the carbon cycle, fossil fuels' impact on climate change, how to measure a tree's carbon storage capacity, and what happens to the carbon that is stored by trees.
Fun graphics and jokes throughout the resource will keep students entertained and engaged.
Having activities and questions embedded in the reading makes it easy for students to periodically check their understanding.
Prerequisites
Students should have a basic understanding of the carbon cycle.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers can use this resource to either introduce topics like greenhouse gases, photosynthesis, the carbon cycle, and carbon sequestration or to summarize information learned in an in-depth unit on these topics.
To get students moving, teachers can have them measure trees on the school grounds to calculate their carbon storage.
Teachers can use this resource to make connections to Sustainable Development Goal 13, Climate Action, and Goal 15, Life on Land. If students are unfamiliar with the SDGs, teachers can use this curriculum guide to find relevant resources.
