Prerequisites
Students may benefit from understanding where the rainforest is located, the parts of a rainforest, and the animals and plants that live there.
Students should understand that plants have many different uses.
Differentiation & Implementation
To make language arts connections, teachers can ask students to analyze the rainforest medicine cabinet as an example of similes and metaphors. Students can write this as both a simile and a metaphor, explaining the difference.
Teachers can connect this video to climate change by discussing how climate change can impact the rainforest. Teachers can also discuss the issue of deforestation.
After hearing about how big trees in the rainforest can get, students can look into the carbon sequestering capacity of trees, understanding that old-growth trees sequester more carbon. This lesson may help teachers communicate these ideas.
To make connections to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, teachers can discuss how protecting the rainforest can help address many of the goals, including Goal 3, Good Health and Well-Being, and Goal 15, Live on Land.
