Synopsis
In this StudyJam from Scholastic, students will watch an animated 3-minute video about plants and photosynthesis, listen to a sing-along about photosynthesis, and take a quiz to test their knowledge.
Students will learn about the basic inputs and products of photosynthesis and how plants get what they need to make their own food.
For many students, especially those who are auditory learners, the use of music will help them remember important information from this resource.
In the karaoke component, students can easily toggle the vocals on and off to help them learn the tune.
Prerequisites
Students should understand that plants need water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide in the air to grow.
The vocals track on the karaoke music is slightly off the beat of the music.
Point out to students that plants don't actally "cook" the ingredients during photosynthesis, but use energy from the sun to power the chemical reactions that take place.
Differentiation & Implementation
For a hands-on activity, students can grow two plants, keeping one in a dark area and one in the sun. Students can track the progress of the plants to determine the importance of the sun in a plant's growth.
Students can demonstrate their understanding of the video by writing two sentences about photosynthesis, including the necessary ingredients.
After watching this video, students can transition to learning about the carbon cycle and its connections to climate change. This video can help explain the connection.
