Synopsis
In this interactive story map from Urban Green Lab, students will learn about this project, which platforms the voices of people who have experienced homelessness and the challenges of navigating climate change during this time.
Students will understand how shortened transitional seasons, flooding, and extreme heat disproportionately impact those without housing and what can be done to address this issue.
This resource elevates the voices of people who may otherwise not be heard.
The interactive components of this resource will keep students engaged with the information.
Prerequisites
Students should already understand climate change.
Though the resource is Nashville-specific, students outside of Nashville may benefit from understanding this perspective on climate change.
Differentiation & Implementation
Students can use the Policy Implications section to inform a persuasive essay with local policy makers as the target audience.
Teachers can use this resource as an expansion activity for a lesson on environmental justice. This high school lesson may be useful.
Students can find the audio files with the community interviews quoted in the resource by clicking the Related Resources button at the bottom of the page. Teachers should note the content warning, which states, "These interviews may contain references to drug use, suicide, domestic violence, and illegal activities."
