Synopsis
This first 19-minute podcast episode of the series from Blue Lab at Princeton University discusses lithium mining and the difference between pro-mine media messaging and the reality of lithium mines, the issues surrounding them, and whether or not they are necessary.
Students will hear how the media is pushing lithium mining as a necessary step in the fight against climate change, various perspectives against lithium mining, and begin to hear about a proposed lithium mine in Gaston County, North Carolina, and the problems it is causing for residents.
Students will enjoy hearing the variety of perspectives on lithium mining.

Prerequisites
Students should be familiar with climate change and understand that the construction of electric vehicles and other devices requires materials like lithium that need to be extracted from the environment. Teachers may want to use this other podcast episode to explain the role of lithium in creating electric vehicles.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers can use this podcast episode to spark a discussion about the different UN Sustainable Development Goals and how it is necessary to consider how an action impacts all of the goals. For example, electric vehicles may contribute to SDG 13, Climate Action, in some regards, but the creation of lithium mines necessary for EVs can negatively impact some of the other goals, and even SDG 13.
