Synopsis
The first six classes in the Ages of Globalization program provide a foundation for understanding human history, the drivers of global change, the effects of globalization on the planet, and the goals of sustainability, peace, and empathy.
In the fifth class, students will take a look at the evolution of economic, religious, political, and international institutions.
Through lectures, readings, and in-class activities, students will understand how institutions shape how we live today.
This lesson does an excellent job of showing students how they fit into the broad and global context in their local capacities.
Students will enjoy the hands-on exploration of the map in this lesson.

Differentiation & Implementation
Economics classes can watch the Chapter 3 video to learn about the evolution of economic institutions.
Students can watch the videos and read the chapter in preparation for an in-class discussion. Teachers can use the short-answer and fill-in-the-blank questions to determine if students completed the required readings.
As an extension of the first activity, teachers can invite representatives from the local institutions to serve on a panel. Students can prepare questions to ask the panelists.
Teachers can make connections to many of the Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 16, Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
