Synopsis
This video from the Village of Oak Park gives students a look into a Chicago-area home that has made changes to their home to prevent more pollution from being released into the environment.
Students will understand the reasons why electric appliances and cars are a better alternative to gas or fossil fuel-powered equipment.
This video gives numerous ways to swap out gas and fossil fuel-powered equipment within homes to create safer and healthier atmospheres within the home and outside.
The resource provides a whole-house examination of equipment and ways to swap out for a more eco-friendly alternative.
The speaker gives evidence and facts about why electric equipment is better for the environment and the safety of the people within the home.
Prerequisites
Students should be able to explain how and why certain things turn on in their homes (something is powering that equipment/appliance).
Students should be aware of safety precautions when it comes to dealing with both gas and electric equipment within their homes.
The format is a YouTube video that will contain advertisements and links to other videos you may not want students clicking on.
Differentiation & Implementation
Students can survey their friends and family members to see how many are currently utilizing electric appliances in their homes.
Students can complete a compare and contrast chart to list the pros and cons of gas appliances versus electric appliances.
If possible, consider embedding the video in a platform like Google Classroom and add comprehension and/or reflection questions to gauge student learning and prevent access to outside videos and advertisements.
Use this ELA lesson for an extension specifically on the benefits of electric cars.
