Synopsis
In this 5-minute video from SciShow Kids, students will learn about the importance of water conservation.
Students will understand the difference between fresh water and salt water, how much drinkable water is on the planet, how water is recycled, and some tips for saving water at home.
The visuals throughout this video help to communicate the concepts clearly.
The role of Squeaks (the puppet) in this video is important, as it may mirror questions and concerns that students have about wasting water.
Prerequisites
Students should understand what it means to waste and that humans need fresh water to survive.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers can expand the discussion about water conservation to the topic of water protection. Teachers can explain that some people and companies release pollutants into the water that can't be easily removed, impacting the water supply.
To connect this topic to climate change, teachers can explain the connection between a warmer climate and more moisture in the air, droughts and floods, and less water available for drinking.
To demonstrate their understanding, students can create posters to inform others of ways they can save water. Students can copy and finish the sentence stem, "I save water by..." and draw a picture to go with it.
