Lesson Plans
2
Synopsis
In this 5-lesson unit from the Global Schools Program, students will explore diversity and unity in global and local communities.
Students will analyze pictures that represent the diversity of homes all over the world, interview a classmate, and collect data about the diversity and values of the students in the classroom.
These activities will help students develop deeper friendships with others in their classrooms.
There are many opportunities for extension, including opportunities for students to express themselves artistically.
Prerequisites
The link to Where Children Sleep for Lesson 2 is broken. Teachers can find this book here.
Some students may need explicit instruction on how to actively listen. Teachers may want to model what this looks like.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers can use these lessons at the beginning of the school year to foster a culture of mutual respect and encourage students to get to know each other.
After listing and tabulating the qualities of a good friend in Lesson 4, teachers can ask students to think about what it looks like to display that quality. Students can draw a picture of what it looks like to have or display one of the qualities discussed.
Teachers can also enter student responses for friendship qualities into a word cloud generator to show an alternative way to represent the most important qualities in a good friend.
