Synopsis
This resource from The Global Goals introduces students to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 by explaining what gender equality is, why it matters globally, and how gender-based discrimination affects access to education, healthcare, safety, and economic opportunity.
The resource presents an overview of key global gender equality issues, outlining the nine targets for this goal, to support student understanding of social justice and human rights in a global context.
The targets are given and explained with short, straightforward chunks of text that will be manageable for most students.
Gender equality is a topic that many students may already be familiar with.
Prerequisites
It may benefit students to have some background knowledge on gender inequality.
Differentiation & Implementation
After looking at the targets, students can analyze relationships between this goal and the other SDGs. Students can identify goals that are connected and use evidence from the text to defend their claim.
After reading, students can discuss the Things To Do section and translate one of the suggestions into an age-appropriate action plan.
Teachers can use this video to illustrate the connection between gender equality and climate solutions, and also highlight climate solutions that have the co-benefits of contributing to gender equality, such as clean cook stoves and sustainable agriculture. Teachers can also discuss how education and family planning for women and girls can contribute to curbing population growth and the related use of resources.
Students in civics classes can discuss the kinds of policies and laws that can be implemented to address this goal.
