Synopsis
In this Fall Activity Guide from Nature Lab by The Nature Conservancy, students try simple, seasonal activities—leaf prints, a sunset sensory walk, owl-call listening, glow-in-the-dark play, and a nature read-aloud—to practice observation skills and connect with local nature.
The guide provides step-by-step instructions, materials lists, and brief background information for each activity, making it easy to explore seasonal changes and local wildlife.
These activities require little preparation and materials, making them easy for most students to implement with their families.
In doing these activities, students will gain an appreciation for nature.
Prerequisites
Students may have family situations or live in areas that make it more difficult to participate in some of the activities listed.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers can send this guide home with students before the first day of fall, asking them to complete one or more of the activities with a family member. At the end of the season, students can share their favorite thing about doing the activities.
Teachers can collaborate with the library to find books for each student to bring home to have story time.
As an art project, students can create journals to write and draw pictures about their experiences doing the activities with their family.
To make connections to climate change and ecology, teachers can guide students in a discussion about what they appreciate about nature in the fall and emphasize the importance of protecting the world around us.
