Synopsis
In this activity from BioInteractive, students explore case studies of biodiversity loss and evaluate different conservation strategies designed to protect threatened species and ecosystems.
Students learn how human activities affect biodiversity and develop evidence-based solutions that support ecosystem health and long-term sustainability.
This resource provides authentic biodiversity case studies that help students connect ecological concepts to real-world conservation challenges.
This well-structured approach to expert and jigsaw groups gives students opportunities not only to share their new knowledge with their jigsaw groups but also to put it into practice.
Prerequisites
Students should understand basic ecology concepts, including food webs, ecosystem interactions, and the importance of biodiversity.
The materials section refers to a slide deck that does not appear to be included in the resource. This material is optional, so it should not impact the implementation of this lesson.
This lesson will take at least three to four 50-minute class periods. The resource includes suggestions for extension and for reducing in-class time spent on the lesson, depending on teachers' needs.
Differentiation & Implementation
To reinforce the connection between the threats to biodiversity and climate change, teachers can explain how the prevalence of invasive species is exacerbated by climate change, and climate change is exacerbated by the other threats to biodiversity.
Teachers can use this resource to make connections to the Sustainable Development Goals, primarily SDG 14, Life Below Water, and SDG 15, Life on Land.
To make connections to art, students can create their own comics to demonstrate their understanding of the species covered in their Wild Hope episode, using the seal comic as a mentor text.
