Synopsis
In this detailed report from the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, students will read the results of a survey of 2,000 Indonesian adults about their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors regarding climate change.
The eye-opening report also includes the survey's methods, demographic information about participants, and graphs to represent the survey results.
This report does a great job of providing contextual information about Indonesia's political and cultural background.
This report gives multiple ways students can access the data, such as in tables, written descriptions, and graphics.
Prerequisites
Students should have a basic understanding of climate change, its causes, and its impacts.
Students should understand data given in percentages and charts.
Differentiation & Implementation
Teachers with limited class time or students with lower reading stamina can have students read the executive summary, rather than the full report.
This report discusses Indonesia's prioritization of increasing the production and use of biofuels. Teachers can use this video to help illustrate the costs and benefits of biofuels to the environment.
Students in social sciences classes can use the Methods section as an example of how professional studies are designed and conducted to ensure subjects are representative of the population.
Teachers can split students into groups and have them analyze and discuss specific question sets and results. Students can discuss what might account for the results, such as Indonesia's cultural background, political climate, or geographic location.
Though some of the questions may differ, students can compare the results of this survey to its American counterpart.
