Synopsis
In this module from OER Project: Climate, students will evaluate the complexities associated with implementing solutions for adapting to climate change and its impacts.
Through guided research, students will analyze various solutions for their cost, the time to implement, and the potential impact.
This is one of many lessons in the online Climate course by OER Project.
The reading in this module ends with an inspiring story of Bangladesh and its resilience against climate impacts that will give students hope for the future.
This module includes a claims-testing activity, where students will strengthen the important skill of evaluating a source and their claims. This skill is increasingly important both inside and outside of the classroom.
Prerequisites
The link for the adaptation solution research is broken. Students can use the internet to conduct their own research. Alternatively, teachers can select resources ahead of time for students to use.
The SubjectToClimate database has a few resources on different adaptation solutions, such as this video and this report.
Students should have a basic understanding of the greenhouse effect.
Differentiation & Implementation
Many of the climate change adaptation areas mentioned in this module have direct correlations to specific Sustainable Development Goals. Teachers can break students into groups, giving each group an area to find related SDGs. Teachers can use this guide to find resources for teaching about the SDGs.
Students can play this game to simulate making decisions with limited resources to adapt to climate change and its impacts.
To make the design challenge a more hands-on activity, students can create models of their cities using craft supplies or found objects, pointing out the components of the city that make it resilient. Students can present their models or view each other's models in a gallery walk.
