Synopsis
In this comic book from World's Largest Lesson, Chakra the Invincible of Mumbai switches places with Leela and learns how girls are treated differently from boys.
This story will help students understand how women and girls often do most of the unpaid labor and care-giving, may have fewer freedoms, and have less time for learning and leisure activities than their male counterparts.
Students will love the artwork in this comic book and the picture-focused writing style.
This resource does a great job of introducing a vast and complex topic like gender inequality in a way that is easy for young learners to understand.
Prerequisites
It may benefit students to understand that women and girls are treated differently from men and boys. It may also benefit students to understand women's struggles to gain equality throughout recent history.
Differentiation & Implementation
The call to action at the end of the comic book, asking students to change their parents' behavior, may stump students or make them uncomfortable. To support students who feel like they are not being treated equally at home, teachers can provide students with information to help families understand the importance of gender equality.
This comic references the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Teachers may want to give students an overview of the SDGs as a whole. This video is great for introducing the SDGs to young learners.
Students can reference the points in the comic where Leela was treated differently from the boys and discuss how this may affect her future. For example, students may make the connection that having to do chores before getting to do her homework may impact Leela at school.
Teachers can use this resource to help older students understand the connection between gender equality and climate change or use it for building their own background knowledge.
